T.I.P.S

This time around I would like to discuss the subject of tipping, does anyone know where this system came from? Or why it started? Well if not then you can say you've learned something today. The term TIPS comes from an old English acronym and means To Insure Prompt Service. And to accomplish this, individuals who went out to eat would "tip" their waiter prior to the meal so that they would be well taken care of. That's right, at the beginning and not at the end. I find this interesting, as the custom has changed so has the definition of waiter/waitress has changed from more professional servers to the college students and single Mom's that provide the majority of the serving field today. Well I figured that would be a nice little tidbit of info, I know not as interesting as some of my other posts but I hope you find it interesting as well. That's it for now I suppose, you always learn something new when you're living, in the weeds.

P.S. When going out please consider that tips are the only way servers make any money, so tip accordingly. In other words, if your service was great and the server/bartender made a difference in making your visit an enjoyable one please tip 20% or greater. On the other hand if your waiter/waitress did not provide at least good service then use your own judgment. Thanks!

Hi, just thought that I'd stop by! I'm English and "tipping" is an art form here! Usually it is 10% of payment due, and we pay at the end of the service!
It's the same with drinking tea, another English custom. Now what comes first? Milk or tea? Well, I'll tell you, if you are drinking from a fine china tea-cup, then milk goes in first as hot liquid will crack it. If it is just your old everyday mug, then tea or coffee goes in first!
Odd customs, but that that's the way things go!

You know I've always respected the English affinity when it comes to tea. Recently I've taken to adding milk to my tea and absolutely love it. What part of England are you from?

I'm from the Border area. That means that I live on the English side of Scotland by 2 miles! Someone has to keep them out!!!
I lived in Boston, Mass, for a while though when I was married.
Tea drinking is a great tradition!
Where do you live? I write to quite a few "invisible friends" in America though.

Haha wow it must be beautiful over there. I am in Maryland actually, its pretty boring over here adn I'm looking to egt out when I get the chance. I have always wanted to visit the British isles, the scenery looks amazing, and yes I know I sound like every other American probably ;). But thx for commenting, I am now a follower of your blog, the fairies post was really interesting.

Thanks Bruce! I was just going to mention the word POSH and where it came from. It goes back to when the English were in India during the 19th century. The English always wanted to be in the sunshine, so it became Port Out, Starboard Home.Just a bit of trivia! By the way, I just love to chat, and I love your quotes at the side of your page. I'd never thought of a word being misspelled before!

Wow, I never knew where that came from before. It seems I learn new things every day. I love chatting as well, and learning new things about different places. Thanks for the compliment.

Anything to help out! Maybe you can help me with a problem, and that is how to leave a message on these embedded posts? I can never leave any message on them and it gets really annoying. I know there are loads of posts that I'd like to write on, but I just can't manage it! From what I have read from other people, this is a common problem. Any ideas?

I'll look out for an answer, as of right now I am not entirely sure being newer as well.

I've been blogging for about 18 months now and I still can't get the hang of it! But still, you learn something new everyday!
I've just been reading Krista's page, and it seems interesting, making a movie, I mean!
I started to write when I broke my ankle while out running. I try to go running everyday, and I have proven that it is impossible to run backwards and talk at the same time! So I ended up with crutches, and got addicted to blogging!

Hahaha that is an interesting way to "fall" into blogging. Yea Krista and I worked together for a while and she is an interesting person. I always told her I cant wait to watch a movie and see her name in the credits.

She seems to be a very interesting person, and by her profile we seem to have lots of things in common.
I don't know if you have noticed but the world seems to be divided into two halves, one side Harry Potter and the other Twilight. Personally I prefer Twilight, but I'm still undecided as Harry is English and Bella is American. Strange world that we live in, but stick with me and you'll eventually understand me!!! I just get a bit mad from time to time, especially since it's now 12:00 a.m. (Monday, now!) I'll have to write out something quick for a new post for the morning...or I'll turn into a pumpkin!!!!

Haha it is wierd how that happens, seeing as I am a huge harry potter dork. I absolutely love it. But I'm glad we have met, even if it is via a computer screen. Anyway I hope you get some sleep and I'll talk to ya another time.

Damn this time zone, but that is what happens with living on a sphere!
Looking forward to chatting with you soon. It seems odd saying have a good night when it is only evening where you live!
But anyway, have a good evening/night!
Take care, talk soon.

Hi Bruce, just thought that I'd stop by and ask how you are doing?
